Melanie Chavous is a Public Safety Officer for the City of North Augusta (SC) who was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana. She made a major step in her life when she decided to move to South Carolina to attend college on a volleyball scholarship. She obtained her BA in Psychology, and shortly thereafter entered the workforce working with troubled youth.

Melanie entered Law Enforcement a couple of years later as a 911 tele-communicator only to realize that she wanted to become a police officer. She has worked as a Patrol Officer for nine years before transferring to North Augusta High School as their School Resource Officer. She has enjoyed this position for the past three years.

Melanie's desire to be a part of Support 1 comes from her involvement as a spouse when her husband, Chris, was involved in two different critical incidents. She not only felt the effects of what it did to her, but how it affected him and their marriage as well. The support that she and her husband received from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Assistance Program (SCLEAP) proved beneficial. She would like to see the great support provided by programs like SCLEAP step-up and expand to the next level.

Melanie enjoys spending her time off with her son, CJ and her husband. Together they enjoy camping and cheering on the South Carolina Gamecocks and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Melanie has been coaching volleyball for a local middle school for the past 12 years and volunteers at her church as a high school youth group leader, the medical team coordinator, and in the children's ministry.
